I joined the ACCA journey when I started carrying my third child, my cute Bear and was living in Danang City, my beautiful town in the central of Vietnam. As there was no training center in my place, I had to fly to Hochiminh City for revision class and examination at weekends.
I appreciated my company sponsorship in supporting me in my career growth and roadmap by motivating me to take ACCA qualification. By that chance, I got the opportunities to acquire huge knowledge and new concepts from our beloved lecturers with whom I value every class hour.
In the fundamental phase, I was impressed by many skillful lecturers. Teacher Fung delivered me the primary understanding on Management Accounting in F2. His method of transferring to us systematically the complex variance analysis and fundamental background of overheads was amazing. He designed his lecture content in a connecting way so logically and scientifically. The class time of Teacher Billy Ang would be always remembered with his heartful intenseness to convey to us so high condensed syllabus of F7 Financial Reporting (and later P2 Corporate Reporting). Teacher Balwan Singe delivers his lessons of Performance Management F5 and Financial management F9 with passion, like an actor in his drama show.
After the F series of 9 fundamental, there come the P series of 5 professionals. In the professional phase, students have to take 3 essentials and 2 options. For essentials, Teacher Marty Windle guided me fly over from P1 to P3 without any barriers. In P stage, there is not much numbers, but concepts and principles. Marty enlightened me through abstraction concepts of governance, risks, and ethics and through multi-dimensions thinking over business analysis, with his humor sense. He encourages two-way communication between lecturers and students, so we did have good time sharing our own opinions with the class. We are named by the company we are in, and I really loved him call me “Ms Pepsi” besides others “Ms KPMG”, “Mr Deloitte”, “Ms PWC”… My 2 options both fell in the class of Teacher Hua Chia Yee, Advance Financial Management and Advance Performance Management. Entering his class, you enter the excited world of Wall Street stories of bonds, shares, financial derivatives and mergers and acquisitions in P4, then from strategic planning to performance evaluation in P5… I admired his excellent smart lecturing skill though condensed syllabus at these intellectual level, helping us gradually stepping out from the confusion on the most complicated financial module.
Taking revision and examination from a geologic distance, I counted much on the great support from the FTMS, the training center. I believed I received better care than others (small priority for a student from small town J) when FTMS staff preparing and sending text books to Danang with much care, when Ms. Van kept encouraging me to move forwards on taking exam in some periods I felt depressed from my job of a finance manager, my pregnancy and my three kids raising up.
2014 is the year of my graduation and I have been ACCA member for less than 2 years. Looking back to the examination time recalls me of excitement. The feeling of long nights practicing and practicing, the eager readiness for facing the challenges thirst me. I found that it is not very hard to pass ACCA examination. In my case, I passed most of the exams at first attempt. My recipe was very simple. First, maximize the time in revision class by understanding the lecture and lecturer exam techniques. Second, clear my confusion on a certain subject by asking Teacher, asking my classmates or researching in the internet right away when I met one. Third, drill and drill, covering the whole syllabus in the most attainable way you can. It means if I had much time, I covered all syllabus, all exercises. If I do not have enough time, I covered whole syllabus, at least one exercise. Then, step by step, I achieved my dream.
To me, as ACCA member, the ACCA journey does not end, but starts…
